What You Should Ask Your Practitioner
Treatments with dermal fillers are considered minimally invasive procedures.
Although they are only administered to the face, neck, and décolleté using a needle or cannula, it remains essential that they are performed in a clinical environment, using sterile equipment, and by a licensed medical professional.
Take the time to discuss your expectations with your practitioner so they can tailor the results to your individual needs.
Do not hesitate to ask about contraindications and potential side effects of the treatment.
For example, Teoxane products are contraindicated for any use other than those specified in the instructions for use, and in cases of certain medical histories (e.g., allergies, skin conditions, ongoing or past treatments), during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in children, or in the presence of other filler implants.
Adverse effects may occur either immediately after injection or at a later time.
Common side effects include:
– Injection site pain
– Redness/erythema
– Bruising/hematoma
– Swelling/edema
– Lumps/nodules
– Itching
– Discoloration (including Tyndall effect)
Less common side effects include:
– Inflammatory reactions
– Infections (including localized or systemic infections and abscesses)
– Loss of sensation or temporary paresthesia around the injection site
– Allergic reactions (including hypersensitivity, allergic eczema, hives)
– Nodules (possibly granulomas)
– Filler migration
Rare but serious adverse events may include:
– Intravascular injection, which may cause embolism, vessel occlusion, ischemia, skin/tissue necrosis, temporary or permanent visual disturbances (including blindness), or cerebral ischemia/hemorrhage leading to stroke or heart attack.
Immediate hypersensitivity reactions may also occur, including angioedema or anaphylactic shock.
